Julia Kouneski investigates empathy, embodiment, and the fluidity of the self through a multidisciplinary practice spanning performance, video/film, installation, and participatory projects. She received her BFA in Studio Art from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and her MFA from the University of Southern California Roski School of Art and Design in Los Angeles. Along with her education in visual art, she has independently studied somatic movement and bodywork practices that contribute to her research of the body and performance. Her work has been exhibited in the US and internationally, at galleries and museums including Night Gallery in Los Angeles, Annka Kultys Gallery in London, De Hallen Haarlem Museum in the Netherlands, and the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center in Atlanta. Her work has been supported by the Jerome Foundation and the Rema Hort Mann Foundation, and she has guest taught and lectured at Otis College of Art and Design (Los Angeles), Goldsmiths University (London), Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MN), Macalester College (St Paul, MN), and Emory University (Atlanta, GA).
